Over
33 million people worldwide take an NSAID daily. In spite of this commercial
success, chronic use of NSAIDs has well documented adverse side effects on
the gastrointestinal tract (the “GI”). These adverse effects include
ulcers and bleeding that are associated with significant morbidity and mortality.
Over 100,000 hospitalizations and 16,500 deaths per year are directly related
to NSAIDs in arthritic patients.
In this market there is a clear opportunity for an NSAID with lower GI toxicity.
PLx believes that its proprietary formulations of NSAIDs will dramatically
reduce NSAID-induced GI toxicity.
Ibuprofen-PC:
Ibuprofen-PC is a molecular complex of ibuprofen and phosphatidylcholine.
The product is being developed for the Rx osteoarthritic and OTC markets.
Pre-clinical data has demonstrated that Ibuprofen-PC has dramaticaly decreased
ibuprofen-induced GI toxicity. The product has completed two Phase III clinical
trials for equivalent labeling to ibuprofen. A Phase II/III trial demonstrating
enhanced safety has been completed.
